Legislators Pushing for DNA Law Change
Police in Tasmania are actively pushing for the law to allow police officers to obtain DNA samples from children under 10. This legislative amendment push involves a case regarding Gary John Devine, a convicted sex offender.
Devine, 51, has previously been jailed for prostituting a 12-year-old girl; he is now under investigation for possibly fathering a child with her then 15-year-old sister. While police want to take a DNA sample from the baby boy in question to determine paternity, they are restricted by the Forensic Procedures Act from doing so.
If the act passes then police could take DNA samples from young children who could be involved in a crime but are not suspects of that crime.
