Panama City is the U.S. Divorce Capital

Ever wonder where the divorce capital of the nation is? The answer is Panama City,Fl., according to a list compiled by the Daily Beast. As a state, Florida has 11 cities out of the top 50, and four out of the top ten, in the country.

Curious about where the highest rates of divorce are in the US, reporter Lauren Streib used two methods to compile the list: the percentage of the population that was recently divorced and the percentage that was already divorced. According to their calculations, 15.5% of Panama City's population falls into these categories.

Speculating on this growing trend in Florida, marriage counselor Dr. Joel Prather spoke about patients who believed that coming to this warm state could, in some way, repair their failing marriage. Other experts believe that people come to Florida for new opportunities or to escape their old lives and, in the process, wind up getting divorced.
