New York Pushing for Domestic Violence Offender Database
Inspired by the story of Sarah Coit, who lost her life at the hands of a repeat domestic violence offender, three New York State legislators are attempting to push a new bill forward. This would create the Domestic Violence Offender Database, an idea that has long been in place but has yet to come to fruition.
Coit reportedly lost her life at the hands of Raul Barrera, who had multiple instances of domestic violence and abuse on his record. Her story is now being used by lawmakers like State Senator Eric
Adams (D-Brooklyn), Assemblywoman Vanessa Gibson (D-Bronx), and Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries (D-Brooklyn). At a press conference last week, Gibson told reporters that "We have to protect women, and we do not want to wait for any murders to occur as they have done before we take action." Without a law like this in place, incidences like Coit's could continue to harm or even kill innocent people.
The registry would work just like a sex offender registry. People could go online and gather the information they need.
