Protecting Yourself Financially during Divore
If you are considering divorce you have much more to think about then just parting ways with your spouse. It is important to think about things like protecting your credit now before your divorce has been finalized.
Although you may be hurt and angry, you should not try to get revenge on your spouse through financial means. In essence, the longer you spend arguing over division of assets, the more money both parties will spend on their lawyers. This will hurt your finances down the road as well, long after your marriage is over. If it is possible, use a mediator or financial professional to divide up assets, rather than an expensive lawyer.
Next, you need to pay off any jointly held credit cards, and then split up or cancel these cards. You do not want your credit affected by your spouse's inability to pay their portion of the bills, so try to do this before the divorce has been finalized. If you aren't sure where to start, run a credit check on both of your names to see what you need to pay off. If you suspect that your spouse might try to open up a joint account during the divorce proceedings, place a freeze on your name to prevent this from happening.
