Woman Gets $58,000 during Divorce Proceedings due to Domestic Abuse
A jury recently awarded a woman $58,000 as part of her divorce proceedings due to the abusive actions of her husband.
Anant Patel, 33, was ordered to pay his ex-wife, 28-year-old Madhuri Patel, $28,000 in compensatory damages and $30,000 in punitive damages for the injuries he inflicted on her. Although Patel was not required by law to pay her alimony, he was supposed to share nearly $10,000 from a joint bank account, as well as half of his 401(k) savings. Patel was also required to keep her listed as a beneficiary on his life insurance policy "until his obligations are satisfied."
The Patels had been married for three years and had no children together. In a bizarre twist, the defendant's family testified on behalf of Patel, but had witnessed many of the beatings that he had inflicted on his wife. It was one of her coworkers that testified about the marks on her neck and face as signs of domestic violence.
