Reasons to Create a Prenuptial Agreement
Are you getting married soon? Congratulations! While you are busy planning the wedding and honeymoon, you may also want to consider creating a prenuptial agreement.
If you think that prenups are just for the rich and famous, think again. More and more couples are opting to sign these agreements to protect what assets they do have. Under certain circumstances it is beneficial to ask your partner to sign a prenup. For example, if you own property solely or jointly, have $50,000 or more worth of assets or own part/all of a business, you should really consider a prenup.
In addition, if either party has children from a previous marriage, a prenup will ensure that those children have access to certain funds in the case of a divorce or death.
Other circumstances that could prompt a prenuptial agreement include a salary that exceeds $100,000 annually; one partner intends to pursue an advanced degree while the other works; you have earned at least one year's worth of retirement benefits; or if you want your estate to go to a third party.
