Cases of Teenage Domestic Violence on the Rise
Although the news is often filled with stories of domestic violence between married couples and other adult couples, teenage dating violence is actually on the rise.
According to the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence 40 percent of teens have been involved in an abusive relationship; of that group 43 percent have experienced violence and abuse while at school. Since teens are at a higher risk of intimate abuse than adults, it is vital that adults get involved as soon as they believe there to be a problem.
The coalition believes that the best way to catch, deter and stop domestic violence is where it occurs frequently, at school. Since teens are already a captive audience during the day they are more likely to hear the messages they need to get the help necessary to protect themselves.
As a representative for the Sioux City Council on Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, Kemi Jones says that adults should look out for certain warning signs. These can include an increased isolation, even from friends, due to the overbearing influence of an abusive partner and obsessive texting with that partner.
