Rep.Tom McGillvray Wants Couples to Undergo Counseling Before Divorce is Granted
If Representative Tom McGillvray gets his way, couples would have to undergo marriage counseling before being granted a divorce.
The Republican lawmaker is attempting to enact a law that would require couples who have children under the age of 18 to attend seven meetings with a counselor. Since he believes that divorce is ruining not just the lives of the two adults involved, but even more so the children, this could cut down on the number of frivolous divorces being granted every day.
He is getting some support from fellow lawmakers, such as Rep. Dave Howard (R-Park City) who said that counseling "saved my marriage. I can tell you I don't know what would've happened to my girls if we wouldn't have stayed together and all of the problems and the things that you go through. However, Rep. Edie McClafferty (D-Butte) does not agree with this possible legislation. Luckily for him it was later shot down on the House floor in a 60-40 vote.
