Familiarizing Yourself with Spousal Support

While some couples will opt for short-term spousal support, to help one spouse get back on his/her feet after the divorce, others will qualify for long term support. The amount of money you will receive and the length of time that you will receive it will vary depending on what state you reside in. For example, California divorce law state that for marriages under ten years, the recipient party can receive spousal support for a period that equals half the length of the marriage.

Spousal support is intended to help the person who either managed the household (i.e. did not work) or worked just part-time. While courts in all states are loathe to grant "lifetime support" during a divorce, it can and does happen under the right circumstances.
