New Bill Will Give Women Better Protections
Two bills that have already passed through the California Senate could give women better protection at home and work.
One bill, SB 299, is sponsored by Sen. Norren Evans. It would stop employers from cancelling health insurance for women who are on maternity leave up to four months. This would bring women's maternity rights in live with similar state and federal laws regarding disability pay. However, the bill would also allow employers to reclaim insurance premiums if the woman fails to return to work after her maternity leave.
The second bill, SB 430, which states that strangulation is a traumatic event. Therefore it should be seen as a precursor to felony charges in domestic violence cases. In fact, it can often lead to murder, making this bill vital to protecting women in abusive relationships. It is backed by several nonprofit organizations and law enforcement groups who hope to see it passed this year.
