Facebook Cited in Many Divorce Cases
Not just used for chatting with friends anymore, Facebook is now being cited in an increasing number ofdivorce cases.
According to a survey released by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, 81 percent of top-tier attorneys are using evidence from social networking sites in divorce proceedings. Facebook alone accounts for 66 percent of all evidence.
Commenting on these findings, clinical psychologist Steve Kimmons says that it is becoming more common, that "one spouse connects online with someone they knew from high school. The person is emotionally available and they start communicating through Facebook. Within a short period of time, the sharing of personal stores can lead to a deepened sense of intimacy..." that is being blamed for divorce.
This phenomenon is not limited to the United States, as a U.K. online divorce service also reported on the Facebook-divorce link. Of the current 5,000 divorce petitions sent through the site, 989 of them had the word "Facebook" appearing in them.
