Blue Cross & Blue Shield to Start Offering Benefits to Domestic Partners in Rhode Island
A new policy in Rhode Island has made headlines this month.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield will start offering benefits for same-sex partners to those people who buy their own health insurance instead of going through their company. Starting July 1, the plan formerly known as Direct Pay will be open to same-sex partners who are not eligible to get coverage through their own employer. Those interested in joining Blue Cross can do so on the policy"s anniversary date or during open enrollment.
To qualify for this policy, the domestic partner must be of the same gender as the subscriber, be financially interdependent and have lived together for one year or more. The plan is also open to Rhode Island residents have a civilly recognized union from another state or have been married in a different state. If there are any dependent children, they too can be added once the partner has been successfully added to the policy.
