Economic Status and Its Impact on Divorce
A recent study based on the results of Census data show that the nation's poor are affected by divorce differently than those in higher economic strata.
The study, entitled 'Number, Timing and Duration of Marriages and Divorces: 2009' shows that impoverished people who file for divorce are affected more greatly by divorce than other economic groups. Although there is no one factor that contributes to this, the study believes that factors such as education can affect the divorce rate. Those who did not finish college were found to be 16% to 19% more likely to become divorced.
Sometimes those that did not enter their divorce impoverished soon became so, most often women. Women who are currently under the poverty line are 94% more likely to have been recently divorced than other women. In addition, women who are non-cash government fund recipients are 69% more likely to be recently divorced.
