Domestic Abuse and Animal Cruelty Linked
A coordinator for one research center has informed the public that there tends to be a strong link between domestic violence and animal abuse. The organization has shown that when a person abuses an animal, it is likely that they have also abused another human being. Links have been found between child abuse, child sex abuse, and abuse of the elderly as well as animal abuse and domestic violence.
According to the organization, adults that are cruel to animals tend to lack adequate coping skills or are simply ignorant. These emotional deficiencies do not usually stop with animals. People who are prone to animal abuse are also likely to abuse their spouses and/or their children.
Unfortunately, laws regarding animal abuse in the United States are for the most part outdated, so it is difficult to make assessments regarding the links of cases of animal abuse and domestic violence. However, the organization is working toward informing law enforcement, social services, prosecutors, and domestic violence victims groups of the link between domestic violence and animal abuse so that these agencies can better serve both human and animal victims.
