Valentine's Day's History and its Current Meaning
Posted on Feb 14, 2013 8:16am PST
There is no certainty regarding the exact genesis of "Valentine's Day" which is the story of Valentinus, more commonly known as "Saint Valentine." The only certainty is that he died on February 14. The name Valentinus is derived from the latin word valens which is associated with meanings such as worthy, strong, important and powerful. The saint is known to have been locked up during the Roman Empire for performing weddings for soldiers who were not allowed to get
married and also for acting as a minister to certain Christians who had been persecuted during his time in prison prior to his execution, making him a martyr.
The date of his death first started being recognized during the middle ages at the onset of what today is known as courting. The day is now an internationally recognized holiday. The holiday during modern times has been, and continues to be, an opportunity for people to express love to all of their loved ones including: romantic interests, significant others, partners, husbands, wives, children and even cherished pets. In essence the holiday has evolved into a day to express one's feelings to those who are important to them.
