Woman Granted Divorce from Husband After Posting About Abuse

Abusive relationships can be devastating, and when a spouse feels trapped with a dangerous and harmful husband or wife, this can be a horrible situation. Recently, an American woman was able to receive a divorce in China after she posted photos of her injuries online. In Beijing, the government is reticent to grant divorces to women who file because of their common beliefs on the roles of the genders in the country. Kim Lee was a part of a high-profile case in the country when she tried to expose the dangers of domestic violence in China.

Her case began when she posted graphic photos of her injuries in a blog. The pictures of her bleeding ear, bruised knees and a bump on her forehead went viral and were re-posted on other social media sites. This brave move shocked thousands of battered women who believe that domestic abuse affairs should be kept private. In this country many times women are considered subservient to their husbands and they will endure any beatings without complaint as a part of their cultural expectations. Kim Lee’s brave stance for battered woman merited her a divorce on the grounds of domestic abuse.

She has also obtained a three-month restraining order against her ex-husband. Reports say that Li has been required to pay his wife $8,000 in compensation for the mental and physically anguish that he put her as well as for the child support. She will have custody of the couple’s three daughters and will receive up to $2 million of their properties. This high-profile case may cause more Chinese women who have been abused and battered to stand up against their husbands and seek a divorce. If you have been abused by a spouse, then you should stand up for your rights as an individual and seek help from a family lawyer in hopes of filing for divorce.
