Surviving the Holidays During Divorce

If you're going through a divorce, the holidays, especially the days themselves, can be emotionally difficult. The loss of a job, a death in the family, and the death of a marriage…they all trace back to a loss, and dealing with the holidays at the same time only worsens the blow.

Here are a few tips for navigating the holidays while you're still in the midst of divorce:

1. Build a support network.

2. Remind yourself that it will get better.
If this is your first holiday season alone, remember that it will get better. If you're feeling down, it's only natural so don't be hard on yourself.

Get out and have some fun; it can be the best therapy. Whether that means reconnecting with old friends, going dancing, taking a weekend trip, or spending quality time with your kids, having fun will do your mind, body and health some good!

4. Accept that some days will not be good.

7. Do your holiday shopping online.
Avoid the crowded malls by doing most, if not all of your holiday shopping online. With so many free shipping options, you can save loads of time and avoid the stress of shopping in stores.

8. Focus on others.
If you're feeling down, volunteer at a charity that's dear to your heart. Whether you're collecting toys for poor children or feeding the homeless, it'll feel good to help others – plus you could use a distraction.

9. It's all about the kids.
If you have kids and you're going through a divorce, remember that it's all about the kids. Focus on them having a special holiday, even if it means that you're missing yours.
