Stephanie Puca of North Potomac, Maryland, explains that Hanukkah is an eight-day "Festival of the Lights " in celebration of the Maccabees' victory in 165 B.C. over Antiochus and the rededication of the Temple of Jerusalem. The Maccabees hid for eight total days via candlelight even though the oil was only supposed to last for one.
This is an eight-day period where many families come together and celebrate with their children.
